- Harvard Students Looking for Korean Companies
- Harvard Students Looking for Korean Companies: "It’s About Trying New Challenges with Memorable Co-worker Dinners at Karaokes" Career search surveys from the Harvard Business Graduate School showed that 25% of applicants want an opportunity to visit Seoul: a selection of 108 individuals showed consideration to visit companies such as KT Corporation, LG Household & Health Care, and other South Korean companies. Kunchang Lee · The Chosun Ilbo Posted: May 20, 2019 03:12 "I was impressed with the corporate culture where employees work hard and push each other by saying 'let's do our best!'" (Jordan Lebovic, 28). “It was a really new and memorable experience to go to a karaoke with my co-workers for a dinner, which strengthened our team’s cohesion.” (Rebecca Dausha, 29) A total of 108 graduate students from the graduate business school of Harvard University (Harvard Business School) visited South Korea on the 13th of May. The students where divided into groups, and each visited one of a total 18 South Korean companies. These included firms such as KT Corporation and LG Household & Health Care, as well as Big Hit Entertainment, the agency managing BTS. With this unique chance, the students from Harvard Business School were able to experience and learn strategies and corporate cultures proprietary to South Korean companies. Students had co-worker dinners with their Korean company employees and experienced the Korean karaoke culture. Professor Juan Alcasa, who led the group, was quoted saying "this was an opportunity to experience first hand the IT industry’s level of development, with technologies such as 5G connectivity, as well as Korea's corporate culture devoted around individual work." Harvard Business School students visited Korea on the 16th of May and are discussing possible problems and solutions for Korean companies in a hotel in Seoul after their week-long experience. This visit to Korea is part of the 'FIELD Global Immersion' program, an exploratory endeavor ran by Harvard Business School which started in 2011. After the program’s launch, Harvard Business School has been sending first-year graduate students to locations around the world to broaden their global experiences. Additionally, they have been helping their collaborators by providing advice and solutions to challenges noticed by the students. Harvard University selected 13 cities as candidates this year, including Seoul, New Delhi in India, Helsinki in Finland, and Bogota in Colombia. This year is the first time Seoul has been nominated in this list. Of the Harvard Business School students, 929 had applied to participate in one of the global trips, and about 250 individuals, or one in four, applied to Seoul. The initial upper limit per city was set at 80 stuents per city, but due to the high number of applications for Seoul, 108 graduates were ultimately granted permission. Adam Croft, a 30 year-old graduate student said: "I went with Seoul because of the huge popularity of K-pop. I have also been interested in Korea, which is a global leader in the IT and beauty industries." As mentioned before, the students were divided into 18 teams of 6 students each. These groups visited their corresponding companies and received various assignments from their employers. A cable TV company gave graduate students an assignment about “finding a solution in a system where a high number of elderly customers (who struggle to operate remote controls and set-top boxes) keep calling expert technicians for relatively minor problems.” Jordan Lebovic, who was assigned to this team, said: "we recommended the company to introduce a video call repair service that helps customers solve their problems remotely, eliminating the need to have a technician physically go to the customer’s location." "It was sometimes uneasy and awkward for the company's management to point out how employees should dress or style their hair," said Oliver Cassin, a 31 year-old who worked in a restaurant franchise. Croft also remarked: "even though the company I worked with was a relatively young company, it seemed to be very strict with procedures and formalities. I got the impression that it was a bit rigid." During their visit to South Korea, graduate students met students from Sungkyunkwan University’s Department of Global Business Administration on the 16th and toured the DMZ on the 18th. In their spare time, they also toured around Gyeongbokgung Palace, Gwangjang Market, Noryangjin Fish Market, and Hongik University. Professor Alcasa said, "Korea needs to be proud of its success story." Harvard Business School students will return to the United States on the 20th to announce the final consulting results. - Global Business Administration 2018 Winter Global Camp in Singapore
- Jim Rogers: "I recommend you to work in Korea only after gaining experience overseas." Form a conversation with Korean college students regarding the topic of being a “big hand” in global investment with an emphasis in the spirit of challenge. "For the next 10 to 20 years, the Korean Peninsula will be the most interesting and dynamic investment destination." Deoksik Kim · Maeil Broadcasting Network Posted: Feb 26, 2019 17:15:01 | Last Updated: Feb 26, 2019 17:45:34 “After graduating from college, try looking for experience abroad.” Jim Rogers, the 75-year-old global investor and chairman of Rogers Holdings, was cited above at a meeting with students from the Department of Global Business Administration in Sungkyunkwan University. The meet up, which took place last month, had the speaker emphasize the young demographic’s spirit of challenge. Rogers expressed frustration towards the tendency for South Korean graduate students to anchor themselves to civil service certification exams and said that “it is important to graduate from college and work abroad for about two or three years” in order to “be able to see Korea from the perspective of a global investor.” "I recommend you to work in Korea only after gaining experience overseas." Rogers added. He also suggested that "for the next 10 to 20 years, the Korean Peninsula will be the most interesting and dynamic investment destination." These words line up with Roger’s statements during an interview with Japanese financial newspaper, Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei) published on the 24th of February, where he emphasized the Korean Peninsula as an attractive investment destination worth paying attention in the future. During the same hearing with Nikkei, the 75-year-old businessman mentioned that he cashed out his asset investments in Japan, a country affected by the severe decline in population. Rogers claimed that "the door to North Korea will open someday, as it is no longer realistic for the North Korean government to continue to deceive their citizens when information continues to flow into North Korea from both China and Russia." He also added: "I am looking for an investment (in the Korean peninsula) right now because South Korea has the right capability for management." From the 22nd to the 24th of last month, nine students from the Department of Global Business Administration in Sungkyunkwan University went to Singapore to visit multiple global companies such as BlackRock, the world's largest asset management company. During this same period, the group of students had the opportunity to visit Jim Rogers at his home. In charge of this entire arrangement, the Dean of the Department of Global Business Administration at Sungkyunkwan University, Young-han Kim, explained that "this opportunity was centered around giving students the chance to experience the center of international business. By expanding their connection to experts in the field of investment, students will ultimately broaden their global career horizons." The students who participated in the program agreed, as one undergraduate was quoted saying: "I realized that there is a wide range of different careers in this world." - Community Service Inside the Department of Global Business Administration: Aiding Neighborhoods with Briquette Delivery
- Approximately 30 volunteers from the Department of Global Business Administration took part in a community service project this year. Participants were comprised of both current and pre-enrolled students of the academic year of 2019. This year’s project was held on the 30th of January, and the volunteer group from Sungkyunkwan University met around 4:00 PM to deliver briquettes to people in need around the neighborhood of Seongbuk-dong in Seoul. Ever since the Department of Global Business Administration was established in 2008, the student and administrative bodies have been helping neighborhoods in need by delivering briquettes in preparation of the cold winter season. Referred to as “Yeontan” in South Korea, briquettes are blocks of compressed charcoal and coal dust used as fuel in several East Asian communities, mainly used for cooking and heating. This movement has been possible due to the voluntary participation of students every year and has developed into an end-of-the-year tradition centered around community service inside the Department of Global Business Administration. As for pre-enrolled freshmen who are yet to take part in their first university courses, these community service activities serve as a meaningful opportunity to get to know seniors and juniors from their same academic department. The student council of the Department of Global Business Administration, which hosts the yearly community service event, quoted that “despite the cold winter, the combined effort from the student volunteers and the support from Younghan Kim, the Dean of the Department of Global Business Administration, together with the Director Jongwoo Kim, and Assistant Sangcheol Shin, from the Administration Office of the College of Business and Chinese Graduate School, has generated a warm atmosphere among those participating in this year’s briquette delivery project. Additionally, this event has brought joy in creating opportunities between current and enrolling students to collaborate with each other. We will do our best for the coming years to carry on delivering briquettes to communities so we can ultimately continue being a warm helping hand to those who need help.”
