Interview Answers from Dana Yeleussiz to GBA Alumni!
- 1. Cultural background & employment reality in Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan is a developing country located in Central Asia with well-articulated culture based on the nomadic pastoral economy. While located at the intersection of Asia and Europe, Kazakhstan people have characteristics from both eastern and western cultures. Getting a job at top companies in Kazakhstan might not be as competitive as it is in South Korea.
- 2. The process & the chance of the early graduation from GBA
I really liked the way the program is constructed where it gave me wide options on what subjects to take and just by maintaining GPA threshold I was able to take more credits than was required each semester and graduate in 7 semesters. I was more interested in finance, so the program offered me flexibility to take more finance courses even when I went for an exchange semester at Kelley School of Business. - 3. The interview process at McKinsey & Company
The interview process consists of resume screening, after that you get an invitation to take problem solving test (PST), where your analytical and critical thinking skills are tested. Information for new candidates: PST test is currently replaced with Digital Assessment game. Once you pass the test, you are invited for the first round of interviews with 2 engagement managers of the firm and after the first round of interviews there is the final round of interviews with 2 associate partners and 1 partner of the firm. Each interview consists of 2 parts. First is the personal fit part to see if the candidate is a good fit for the company. Next is the case question, where you have to solve the case.
- 4. My preparation for McKinsey
Before taking PST, I took GMAT exam which is quite similar to PST. So, I didn’t study for PST much. The real challenge came once I was invited to the interview since I never have solved any cases before and even didn’t know what cases look like at McKinsey. First I read some basic books like “Case Interview Secrets”, “Case In Point”, listening to Victor Cheng LOMS, even though I read “Minto Pyramid Book” before, most of the things seemed new at the beginning, but after some time I realized that everything was pretty much what we were doing at GBA. Doing projects together, presenting them in front of the class required the same skillset as in this interview process. After I started digging deeper and enrolled in the Crafting case fundamentals course and its structuring drill for more advanced course. At the same time I tried to meet new case partners and practice solving the cases with people whom I found on communities where everyone interested in consulting is. I would emphasize fit part since often candidates neglect it. But having strong personal stories that you enjoy telling about yourself and preparing them beforehand is the key.
- 5. How did GBA help you in joining the company?
The global entrepreneurial mindset we are taught to have at GBA really helped me out a lot. Like being open about new ideas, making the hundreds of real-life projects at GBA and having the supportive professors always ready to guide you in your career process helped me to become who I am today.
- 6. What kind of life experiences and activities do you think have allowed you to have your current career?
Firstly, I am thankful to GBA program for providing me with the broad knowledge base and necessary skillset in order to try my best at any exam or interview. For ex, I-core project was really fun and insightful experience. Secondly, the exchange semester opened new opportunities at Kelley – I networked with professors and students there, so I got helpful notes on passing the interviews as well as Student Career Development center at Kelley helped me to improve my resume and make it better fit for consulting industry. Thirdly, meeting diverse group of people from different countries throughout these 3,5 years has helped me to become more confident in small talks and to try new things. There were numerous times, when things seemed impossible to me whether it was passing I-core, TOPIK, CFA, GMAT, econ courses at Kelley, interviews with Kelley and McKinsey, I tried to look at new challenged not with fear of failure, but with excitement to try something completely new to me.
Lastly, I would suggest not to neglect our GBA professors’ advice to build quality networks with fellow students, exchange students, professors, you never know where your next biggest opportunity comes from.
